To start, I want to give some love to HBO Max because without it, I wouldn’t be able to catchup on all the amazing DC content.
Now, onto the matter at hand, I just finished Season 1 of Titans and it was epic. I thought it was going to be a lame storyline involving second class superheroes and I couldn’t have been more wrong. And don’t worry, no spoilers below so feel free to read on.
I had a friend ask me to describe it, and I simply said, “Imagine if Suicide Squad was darker, and actually good”. The way they blend the current storyline of bringing all the characters together to fight a common enemy with the telling of their backstories was fantastic. And the fact they made it extremely dark just had a very DC vibe to it. Actually, I realized while watching Titans that when DC stays with dark undertones, the shows and movies are actually good. It’s when the try to make them lighthearted that they turn to trash.
My other big takeaway….finally a badass Robin. Now, before I get some mean comments/tweets, I know there were some badass Robins in the comics but for the most part, the mainstream portrayals of Robin have not been kind (I’m looking at your Chris O’Donnell). They tend to be soft, and always needed to be saved by Batman.
This Robin was the leader of the pack, and just a straight badass. While other people had special powers, he relied on this training and instincts to overcome evil. Not to mention, this Robin has no problem just crushing people. When was the last time you can remember any DC Hero leaving a trail of bodies behind them. The days of a sympathetic Robin are long gone, here to stay is the Robin who doles out punishment for those that deserve it.
Now onto season 2 which looks like Robin gets left behind and Nightwing makes his appearance… I can’t wait. Nightwing never got enough love in the comics which is a shame because we should celebrate anyone who looks to succeed off what they accomplish, not who they are associated with. While Robin will always be known as Batman’s sidekick….Nightwing gets to create his own legacy.
Honestly, Titans wasn’t a show that I thought I wanted, but as it turns out, it was a show that I needed!!
Side note HBO Max, I’m happy to keep the love coming for a free subscription
