The other night, my wife was under the weather and went to bed early, so I had the the opportunity to watch whatever I wanted. I figured this was the perfect time to watch Superman vs The Elite on HBOmax as a good friend recently recommended it.
Don’t worry, no spoilers here, I just wanted to discuss the main premise of the movie which is how should the truly evil be handled?
While most superheroes in both DC and Marvel are committed to protecting the innocent, by not eliminating the truly evil, are they really protecting people? Somehow the worst of the worst, seem to be constantly escaping their prisons and reigning terror upon society. Honestly, Batman and Gotham City PD are the biggest offenders because Arkham is basically a revolving door. Do they even lock the Joker’s cell?
This is where the Elite come into play. Again, no spoilers, but to give some background, the Elite are a team of four individuals with powers who don’t have a problem with murdering bad guys. Tired of seeing the truly evil constantly breaking free from prison and hurting people, they decide to take them out for good. And that’s the premise of the movie, how Superman and the Elite co-exist, and who’s ideology is better for the world.
My thoughts are that both Superman and the Elite are correct. While I agree with Superman that murder shouldn’t be the solution and that we should hold our heroes to a higher standard, it’s hard to disagree with the Elite. More should be done to prevent those with evil in their heart from getting second and third changes to hurt people.
I’ll leave it there and let you formulate your own opinion. if you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it. A truly unique story with an unexpected ending. What else can you ask in a Superman movie where the ending is usually a foregone conclusion…. but not this time.
