For the past 20 years, fans have been dying for better writing in DC Movies. Yes, there was the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, but other than those three films, can anyone really say that there are other DC movies from the 21st century that were actually good? Even worse, several of the movies were so bad it basically killed the franchise….looking at you Green Lantern.
Who would have guessed that the best writing amongst the DC live action universe would come from the “random” CW network. I say random because that channel went from UPN, to the WB, to now The CW and has never been known for this genre. Sure they had some great comedy shows but nothing with this legacy.
What’s different between Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and the other DC shows is that there was already a built-in fan base with high expectations. Fans have grown up reading the comics and watching the cartoons, so the bar was already set. And let’s be honest, comic book fans aren’t known for keeping quiet when they dislike the portrayal of their bellowed comic book heroes.
Not only did the writers exceed expectations, they set a new bar which the movies are now being compared. When Justice League debuted with Ezra Miller at The Flash, he was immediately compared to Grant Gustin aka The CW Flash…..and the comparison’s weren’t flattering. Gustin had done an amazing job cultivating the Flash character, I think we all wish they would have simply cast him in the movie.
But it’s not just The Flash carrying the DC torch on CW, but all the shows. Arrow is one of my favorite shows and even Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning have been solid. If I had one complaint, it’s that there is so many great shows, it’s hard to keep up with them.
Honestly, before being launched on The CW, it had been a tough stretch for the DC brand. Yes, they had Christopher Nolan, but that’s really all they had. The CW writers behind the DC shows deserve a lot of credit for breathing new life into this characters and storylines.
