In honor of the Holiday Season, I want to share what I believe to be the most wonderful days of the year. No, it’s not Christmas, or my birthday….and as I’m sure you can imagine it is sports related, but not the Super Bowl or even the start to March Madness.
But before I share what I believe to be the best day of the year, I want to note that my two biggest sports passions are Red Sox baseball and UNC basketball, and as such, Duke and the Yankees are my mortal enemies.
So the two most wonderful days of the year are when Duke loses in the NCAA Tournament and when the Yankees get eliminated from the MLB Playoffs. For the most part, when those things happen, I go to bed with a huge smile on my face.
But not all loses are equal, the smile on my face varies from year to year depending on just how they are eliminated. For example, if the Yankees lose in game 5 in boring fashion, it’s a great day….but if they lose by a walk-off homerun in Game 7 ala Jose Altuve style, I’m popping a bottle of champagne. I don’t know if there is a better feeling than watching the heart get ripped out of their fans. When Duke lost in the first Round to Lehigh as a 2-Seed in 2012 and Mercer as a 3-Seed in 2014, I was happy the rest of the week. It doesn’t even matter if UNC wins, if Duke loses it’s a great tournament.
It’s not even that I hate the teams that much (though I definitely hate them both a lot), it’s that I find their fans so annoying. It is a special feeling to watch them cry because at the start of every season, they immediately anoint themselves champions and we have to hear about every victory. When the Yankees signed Garret Cole, they were all over twitter predicting victory. When Duke signed Zion, the fans were making travel plans to the Final Four. Yes both teams have a legacy of winning….but that’s what makes the losses so much sweeter.
I was trying to think the best way to wrap-up this blog, and thought there was only one appropriate way……with the greatest music video ever created.
