My guess is that I’m two years late to this post, but like everyone over the past 10 months, I’ve done a extensive search of all my streaming services to continue to find shows that keep me entertained. My most recent discovery was Warrior on HBOMax…..and as someone who’s had HBO for the past 10 years, I can’t believe I had no idea it existed.
For those of you who haven’t seen Warrior, think a Kung-Fu version of Gangs of New York, but as a TV Series. It’s based on the writings of Bruce Lee (so you know it’s got to be awesome), and the director definitely had Gangs of New York on his mind while actually filming. Without providing any spoilers or too much detail, it takes place in San Francisco and similar to the Scorsese film, it involves multiple gangs (in the case called Tongs) who are battling for power with various subplots that makes you think the 1800’s was pretty fucked up.
What’s not to love, the action scenes are incredible, the violence is brutal, the politicians are corrupt, and about a quarter of the show takes place in a brothel. The show starts with the main character arriving to the US and beating the crap out of 4 racists cops. More importantly, the writing of Warrior keeps you engaged episode after episode. There’s no wasted scenes that are meant to simply fill the episode, even as the show jumps from subplot to subplot, everything matters.
Even better, Lady Spork is all in on it too. Normally, shows/movies of this style get an quick no when I suggest them, but I must have caught her in a weak moment because I got her watching the first episode last week and she’s hooked. Since then, we are 8 episodes in and she loves it. Near the top of her list on why she enjoys it, the set and costume design is incredible, the action scenes are awesome, and the women in the show are “badasses”.
So that’s my sales pitch, if you’re looking for an awesome show, Warrior is it. And if you watched it two years ago, thanks for the heads up.
