We all watch movies, and we all know what we like/dislike, but have we ever taken the time to think about what we’ve seen over the course of the year, and how they stacked against one another. Well that’s what’s happening here, this has been an idea of mine for a while now, so decided 2024 is the year.
The “2024 Movies In Review Ranking” is a living blog that is updated after I watch something new; I’ll include date, quick review, and would I watch it again. It’s also important to note, this is only includes movies I’m seeing for the first time. It doesn’t make sense to include movies like Diehard or Christmas Vacation which I’ve seen numerous times as I’m sure most people have.
- Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) IMDB Link
- Date Watched – 7/27/24
- Quick Review – No spoilers here, but Deadpool and Wolverine team up to save the universe. The fight scenes are epic, but even better are all the the jokes (especially those at Fox’s expense).
- Watch It Again – Absolutely, I can’t wait. Might go see it again in the theater
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) IMDB Link
- Date Watched – 2/25/24
- Quick Review – Similar to the first animated movie, this one kicks ass. Love the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man, and the depth of the movie is incredible. Long story short, the Multi-Verse is real, and there are many different versions of Spider Man….we learned that in the first movie.

- Quick Review – The story of PT Barnum and how the “circus” as we know it came to be…..but in musical form. Sure it’s weird seeing Wolverine break out into song, but honestly it’s a great movie.
- Watch It Again – Good shot my wife makes me, but while I might put up a “fight”, in all reality I’m ok with it.

- Quick Review – 2nd part of the trilogy, though not as good as the first. A lot more character development than expected, though it jumped around a lot.
- Watch It Again – Definitely, especially before the final film.
- Monkey Man (2024) IMDB Link

- Quick Review – One of those “revenge” style movies that has you rooting for the underdog. In this case, no super powers, just revenge on the mind as the main character looks to take out society’s elite. The plot is strong and it’s extremely well written.

- Quick Review – The Willy Wonka Origin story we never new we needed. Honestly, never been the biggest fan of Timothee Chalamet (maybe because of how he spells his first name), but he was fantastic. Long story short, Willy Wonka arrives to town broke and wants to share his chocolate with the world…..but “Big Chocolate” wants to run him out of town.
- Watch it Again – Absolutely, especially when my daughter is a little older
- Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) IMDB Link

- Quick Review: There’s 3 previous versions of this film so if you don’t know what to expect, not sure I can help you. Like usual, the action scenes are fire, and the acting is ok. If I’m ranking them all it’s Bad Boys, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Bad Boys 2, then Bad Boys for Life.
- Watch It Again: No doubt I’ll watch it again, it’s a Bad Boys movie….50/50 shot it’s on TNT or TBS in two years and I’ll keep it on. Plus I bought it on AppleTV!

- Quick Review: An adorable Christmas movie about a group of kids from the 80’s who are determined to get a Nintendo! If you are a fan of Jingle All The Way, you’ll enjoy this movie. Definitely family friendly, can’t wait to show it to my little one!

- Quick Review: Was late to the party on this Christmas RomCom, but I liked it. Not much depth to the characters but hard to do with 7 different storylines all being weaved together.
- Watch It Again: Similar to 8-Bit Christmas, it’s going into the rotation for Christmas Movies!

- Quick Review: Think Staten Island Summer (movie) meets LetterKenney (TV Show), that’s the best way to describe this movie. Not everyday a movie stars two 14 year old’s who drink/smoke the entire time while trying to scheme their way to “big money” by buying the Snack Shack at the pool. Oh, and there’s a love story as the two soon to be freshman in High School try to get with their neighbor. Ok, maybe not my best sales pitch but trust me, it’s a good movie.
- Watch It Again: Yep, going to try to convince my wife to watch it this weekend.

- Quick Review: Imagine if Superman (the recent versions) could stop WW2 but without the powers…and was kind of an ass, this is that movie. Henry Cavil and his band of mercenaries work to save the world through unconventional efforts. A war movie with a lot of laughs…..has some Inglorious Bastards tendencies.
- Watch It Again: If some were to ask me if I want to watch this movie with them, the answer is yes……just make sure I can have some cocktails
- Gladiator 2 (2024) IMDB Link

- Quick Review – While not as good as the first one, still a fun movie to watch, especially for nostalgia purposes. Denzel is awesome, but the new “emperors” are creepy as hell. The new “gladiator” is great, though would have enjoyed more backstory. Too much CGI in the fight scenes (especially with the animals) this time around, though the water scene is epic.
- Watch It Again – Probably, I bet I’d enjoy it more second time around to get more of the backstory.

- Quick Review – Think “The Big Short” but with the GameStop stock. Just like The Big Short, you’ll hate corporate America and appreciate the underdog trying to take it down. To make the movie extra fun, you get a couple Dave Portnoy cameos for the Barstool fans.
- Watch It Again – I would if someone was dying to watch it…..and they had a fully stocked bar, but otherwise I get the message behind the film

- Quick Review – Think “TAG” meets “Neighbors”. The plot is a group of friends create a fake friend to get them out of trouble over the years and then have prove it……and John Cena is that fake friend. In a world with “reboots” dominating the theaters, it’s great to see an original concept. If you are looking for a “fun” movie, watch it, no regrets with this film.

- Quick Review – The origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, and it was entertaining. They started as best friends, but end of bitter enemies. If you are a Transformers fan, you’ll love it….though I prefer the live action as compared to the animated films.
- Watch It Again – Add it to the list of movies I’ll have on in the background while working, but it’s a solid movie

- Quick Review – If you enjoy a good RomCom, you’ll enjoy the movie. The acting was good, the jokes were funny, and this guy Beau really stole the movie. If I could change one thing, it’s that he would have gotten more screen time.

- Quick Review – Never thought there’d be a scenario where I’m cheering for President Snow, but there I was hoping he gets the girl (no spoilers). This is a move that I consider great and everyone should see it, but not sure I need to watch again. It hits the high notes but not a lot of depth so once is enough…..but it’s worth seeing.

- Quick Review – Standard Jason Statham movie where somebody wrongs him, and he seeks revenge Though in this case, he’s going after those telemarketers who prey on old people so we really root of him this time.
- Watch it Again – Definitely the fight scenes, the villains in the movie are extra hateable so it’s great watching them get their asses kicked.
- Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) IMDB Link

- Quick Review – Other than the first Transformer movie, probably my favorite live action. Story doesn’t change, the Autobots need to save the world…though this time with the help of the Maximals. Actions scenes are fire and the acting is ok. If you are a Transformers fan, you’ll love this movie.

- Quick Review – Like The Beekeeper with better acting but worse action scenes. A plot that’s been done a million times with corrupt cops getting what’s owed to them but doesn’t mean it’s bad.
- Watch it Again – If someone suggested it, I wouldn’t fight it but seeing it once is good enough for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid movie.
- The Fall Guy (2024) IMDB Link

- Quick Review – Professional Stuntman has to overcome his fear in order to save a movie’s lead character who’s gone missing…..but there’s a twist. RomCom Action film that has some cool action scenes and some decent laughs. Probably should have been better, but I also think the director knew what this film was.

- Quick Review – A hit man who isn’t a hit man, and than who has to pretend to be a hit man. Funny movie with some great twists. Not to mention the “Hit Man” is Glen Powell who is quickly taking over the world.

- Quick Review – A Christmas RomCom where the “high school perfect couple” unknowingly meets 10 years later because the are dating siblings. While it’s a cookie cutter story, honestly it’s well written and was enjoyable. The secondary characters make the movie as the “secret” starts to be revealed.
- Watch It Again – Probably not, but only because a newer version of this style of movie is made every year….doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it.
- Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016) IMBD Link
- Date Watched – 3/16/24
- Quick Review – Hard to describe, but if the Hangover was a Rom Com, this would be a close comparison. Funny story about brothers who need wedding dates (no kidding, it’s in the movie title) but the way the story goes off the rails will have you laughing.
- Watch It Again? – Probably, but wouldn’t be my first choice

- Quick Review – If you wanted Road House with Patrick Swayze and enjoyed it, this is a movie you’ll enjoy. Only downside is your significant other will wonder how Jake Gyllenhaal got so ripped…and he is ripped. But while this is a cliche movie of Good vs Evil, it’s also entertaining as Dalton kicks ass from start to finish.

- Quick Review – Think Blade meets Suicide Squad! Vin Diesel is a anti-hero who hunts witches until he meets his match. The action scenes are strong and the story is ok….at the end of the day, not a bad movie.
- Watch It Again? – Easy movie to enjoy when you’re not focused on it. Will probably watch it again while working.

- Quick Review – Took my 4 year old to see it and she loved it….me, I liked it. If you have seen the previous 3, then you get the plot and you’ll most likely enjoy it.
- Watch It Again – Sure, but only when my daughter requests it….which mean I’ll probably watch it 10 more times this year

- Quick Review – It’s the musical version of the original (with some plot updates) and it’s a decent movie. Does a great job holding to the original and the songs are solid.
- Watch It Again – With a wife and a 4 year daughter, I’m sure it’s in my future….and that’s ok. It holds up to the original and it’s fun.

- Quick Review – A cookie-cutter Holiday RomCom where a series of happen circumstances lead two people to realize they are destined to be together. Honestly, it was enjoyable which a couple characters stealing the show.
- Watch It Again – Probably not, but if someone told me they were going to watch it, I wouldn’t try and talk them out of it.

- Quick Review – Super rich family welcomes new spouse’s into the family with a game of “Hide and Seek”. Has some Tarantino / Kill Bill vibes as the lead fights back. Pretty sure it’s the same house from Batman Begins and X-Men First Class (if those are the same houses).
- Watch It Again – Decent Halloween movie to have on in the background, but wouldn’t sit down and focus on watching it again.

- Quick Review – Female version of The Hangover but in China and nobody blacked out. The “Too Serious” business professional and her wacky friend get into various hijinks while trying to close a huge deal. It’s a raunchy movie that definitely had some laughs.

- Quick Review – Basically the cast of Schitts Creek and American Pie coming together for great laugh. Fun since the actors are so young, so can’t hate watching them develop.

- Quick Review – Think Hall Pass but including Bill Burr and his style of comedy. If you like Bill Burr, you’ll like this movie. It’s funny and does a fun job showcasing the struggle Gen X and Millennials have trying to co-exist in todays society.

- Quick Review – Two broke suburban “couponers” figure out a scam to steal millions of dollars from corporate America, and then try to “clean” their money. It’s funny, probably a little front heavy in quality, but it was a good watch. Paul Walter Hauser is the best character, like a better version of Paul Blart (low bar I know)
- Watch it again? – Probably not, enjoyed the movie but not sure I need to see it again.

- Quick Review – Old Ghostbusters and new Ghostbusters come together to save the world from evil….you guessed it, Ghosts. The villain this time has Night’s King vibes from Game of Thrones. If you like the Ghostbusters franchise, you’ll enjoy this one too…..just don’t expect to much.

- Quick Review – Think “The Interview” meets “Tropic Thunder”. If you like John Cena, lots of violence (a lot that’s unnecessary), and dumb humor, this is the movie for you. It’s not great, but you’ll enjoy watching it.

- Quick Review – If The Rookie (ironic because Dennis Quaid stars in this) had less baseball and was directed by The Pope…..that’s The Hill. Great story about chasing your dream, just not a good movie.

- Quick Review – Think Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Brad Pitt version) but awful, and if the director was trying to make it “artsy”. Some of the scenes are just bizarre, and while the plot should make this film entertaining, it’s just not.
- Watch it Again? – Not only will I not watch again, I will be sure to tell others to avoid this film at all cost.
