Before I tell this tale, it’s important to note that I consider this the best day ever, but still behind the birth of my daughter and all the important milestones with my wife. After all those events, this was the best day ever.
It was October 26th, 2018 and the Red Sox were battling the Dodgers in the World Series and Phoenix was hosting “All Things Comedy”, it’s first true comedy festival. Bill Burr was headlining that night so of course my wife and I would be attending as we are huge fans.
Since it was a Friday, we decided to make a night of it and head downtown early so we can watch the Red Sox game which started at 5pm before heading over to see Burr. Honestly, it was a blast, a bunch of friends came by the bar (Copper Blues) to catchup and the game itself was a battle. Burr was scheduled to take the stage at 9pm so we waited as long as we can to leave for the show. When we did leave, the Red Sox were trailing 1-0 but I had hope.
We get to the show, and like usual Burr kills. If you’ve never seen him before, you are missing out. But as he’s on stage, I kept a close eye on my phone to track the score, and then it happens, the Red Sox tie it up in the 8th inning. From there, the game just kept on going and before we knew it, Burr’s set was over.
With the Red Sox still playing, we decided to head back to Copper Blues (one of our favorite spots) to finish the game. As they always do on Friday nights, they had a live band and the place was packed. By the time we got back to the bar, Game 3 of the World Series had already passed the 5 hour mark, and the friends we left at the bar to go see Burr, were in the same place we left them. And still, the game just kept going, until the bottom of the 18th Inning when the Dodger hit a walk-off homerun.
You’d think that would be a crappy ending to a great day….only it turns out it wasn’t the end. Just as we were about to close our tab and head home, Bill freaking Burr comes running into the bar. And what’s the first thing he does, he jumps on stage with the band to play drums and jam out. Talk about being in the right place at the right time, how many people have had the chance to see Bill Burr on stage performing, followed by Bill Burr on stage drumming.
And while it would’ve been nice if the Sox would have won, it didn’t matter. The fact that game went to 18 innings is the only reason I had the chance to see Bill Burr jamming out. And it helped, they won in 5, so that loss really didn’t matter.
