Brangelina. Ashmi. TomKat. Bennifer. Bennifer part 2. And now Kimye. What do these over the top names mean and what are their importance? Well, these are all famous nicknames that were created to reference famous celebrity couples. But what do they all have in common? Every single one of these famous couples has ended in divorce. As of February 19, 2021 Kim Kardashian West has filed for divorce from Kanye West.
Over the past 10 years or so we have seen the powerful force of Kim and Kanye grace our television screens, magazine covers, social media, talk shows, and pretty much mentioned in many pop culture references. Both Kim and Kanye were already celebrities in their own right before they became the famous couple that we know. Him a famous rapper and her a reality star queen from a now famous family. So why do I find this break up something of importance to mention? It’s because Kim and Kayne as a couple became a force. Love them or hate them, they were a couple that became such a huge part of pop culture. Although most people were always interested in them as individuals, once they became a couple, they represented how being a couple could become a powerful brand and a business. Together they found success that helped their individual businesses, but also created movements. Kanye’s Sunday Service and Kim’s Prison Reform are just two examples alone.
So why do I think through all this it has come to divorce? There have been rumors over the last few years that there were signs of trouble. Some people have mentioned that Kanye’s mental health and public meltdowns have been a big factor. Or that both had an agreement that once their 4 kids were born they could then move their separate ways. I personally think that they are now moving in different directions in their lives. I think Kanye feels he is on a mission of self-discovery and looking for the next big venture he can create while Kim has now realized the power she has individually. She doesn’t need Kanye and the power of Kimye to get things done. She can do it herself.
But I will say that the end of this powerful couple is the end of a celebrity movement. I am curious what next couple comes along to take their place. We all need a couple to obsess over or roll our eyes at in annoyance. #RIPKIMYE
